What we’re all about

Here at Bay Center Montessori School we make it possible for a child to learn through direct experiences, in a world recognized classroom environment and through organized outside activities. Learning evolves through discovery and we make every attempt to install the joy of this discovery from the very first day the child enters our school.

Our Montessori Program consists of four basic areas:

1. Practical Life
2. Sensorial Development
3. Mathematics, and
4. Language

There are also materials in our environment to encourage interest in Art, Music, Literature, Science, Geography, Geometry, Botany, Biology, Foreign Language, Dramatic Play, Seasonal Celebrations, Conflict Resolution Skills Program and Pre-Reading, in addition to a Summer Camp experience.

Practical Life is where the child learns to use materials to create, control, change and care for his immediate surroundings and his own personal well-being. Some of the skills learned in Practical Life include washing, cleaning, typing shoe laces, polishing silver and assembling objects.

Sensorial activities develop the child’s five senses through the use of a variety of materials that possess easily recognizable sensorial properties – bells of various tones, objects with different scents, materials of different textures, substances of assorted tastes, and the colors of the rainbow and their numerous combinations.

The Montessori child acquires reading and writing skills. He develops comprehension of the written word by learning to recognize the direct correlation between the shapes and combinations of letters, and their sound and meaning. Our environment abounds in materials that suggest this correlation.

The Mathematics materials help the child grasp intangible forms, fundamental mathematic concepts, relationships, and operations. The Montessori program in both Language and Mathematics introduces the child to a world of useful ideas represented by symbols.

There are no grades given to Montessori students. They are allowed and strongly encouraged to learn at their own pace and are given both group and individual lessons. A period of time is allotted for the child to work and discover by himself. We do applaud the effort and progress of the child’s work with complementary stickers or happy faces or with words such as wow, great, fantastic, wonderful, and the like. We are here to BUILD SELF-ESTEEM, not squash it. Corrections are only made on papers when the child is ready to self-correct.

To enhance our curriculum even more, here at Bay Center Montessori School, your child will learn Spanish, Sign Language, Computer Explorers, Movement & Music, and Yoga!
